When it comes to Thanksgiving, one thing takes center stage, for some family, others football, but it’s food for everyone. For generations the turkey has reigned as the traditional thanksgiving meat, however, it may be time to reconsider what meat should get the spotlight at the Thanksgiving table. The debate between turkey and ham is one to last. As both sides make their case, it becomes clear that this isn’t just about food, it’s about tradition, taste, and what makes your Thanksgiving feel complete.
Turkey – Myles Frick
When you think of Thanksgiving, you think of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the National Dog Show, or even the football games. But when you sit down at that table for a good “ole Thanksgiving dinner”, you should always have the juicy turkey staring up at you. While some may argue that ham is the only correct choice, it is utterly bitter and tasteless compared to a glazed turkey.
Thanksgiving turkey has remained a staple for centuries, and for ham to believe it stands a chance of taking over the holiday is honestly comical. The turkey leaves an aftertaste, leaving people begging for more, while ham leaves you with a dry mouth, begging for a bottle of water. Thanksgiving lovers around the world need to realize the turkey has been here for centuries and will continue to be here for us.
We need to forget the ham and leave it in its place for Christmas, so turkey can get the love it deserves. From strictly taste, there is no better entree for the Thanksgiving dinner than a glazed turkey. It’s time for the ham to finally take the step into next month, so the Thanksgiving staple can sit at its throne.
Ham – Max Moore
When you think of turkey, you probably think of that dry, flavorless bird sitting in the middle of the table, that everyone reluctantly eats because it’s “tradition”. You take a bite and suddenly you’re reaching for gravy, cranberry sauce, or anything just to help it go down. Turkey has a reputation for being boring, bland, and in desperate need of a flavor rescue.
Now think about ham. Just the word makes your mouth water. Ham is salty, savory, and tender perfection that melts in your mouth. What is there not to like? Apart from the holiday staple of country ham, there are also many other types of ham like honey-baked or city ham to fit your liking. Ham can be cooked many different ways to fit the occasion, and that’s not to mention the countless different types of delicious glazes and finishes. Leftover Thanksgiving ham can be incorporated in breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Leftover turkey, on the other hand, usually ends up forgotten in the fridge for many months to follow.
Ham is a Christmas staple that deserves more recognition at the Thanksgiving table. This holiday season, break the tradition of dull turkey and pick the superior meat. Serve yourself a few slices of ham and let your taste buds thank you.
