Cheerleaders advance to state

KHSAA State Cheer to be held at GRC Dec. 10-11

The GRC cheerleaders will compete at GRC Arena in the KHSAA State Cheer Championships Dec. 11.

GRC advances to state after finishing second in the All-Girls Medium division in the Region competition. Cooper won the division. The first two finishers advance to state.

“When they called 3rd place and it wasn’t us I was kind of discouraged thinking we had lost,” said senior Hallee Cecil, “but as soon as the announcer yelled George Rogers Clark, I was so excited and celebrated with my team. Our team has worked through so many obstacles between switching practice locations constantly and injuries days before competitions and I have never been more proud of my team than I was in that moment. We put our hearts on the mat and our hard work finally paid off.”

The squad did not advance to state last year so the cheerleaders are excited for the opportunity to compete. Being able to compete at home adds a special aspect to the experience.

“Competing in our own gym is great for our team since it is such a familiar setting,” Cecil said. “We have these amazing facilities and getting to use them for your sport is an awesome experience.”

The Medium Division state competition begins at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10. GRC is set to compete at 2:30 p.m.

“This team came back after a tough weekend competing just before Region and was determined to do better and make it to State,” said coach Jerrica Whitaker. “They fought through injuries and sickness and had an amazing performance.”
