Clark County students now get a full week of Thanksgiving break (Nov.22-25) thanks to the proposal of student Board of Education member, Warren Harris.

Harris came up with a plan to have an additional two days added to the break, and with the help of Supt. Dr. McComas and fellow Board members, made it happen.

Harris knows how his peers feel and wants to advocate for his fellow students and CCPS staff. “It made me feel that I was representing my peers, my teachers, and doing what I was put in this position to do,” Harris says.

At Monday night’s meeting, Harris came up with many solid points and gave evidence and facts to back up these points. His initiative carried 5-0 with no opposition. “It was good to know that each Board member was listening to how students feel,” Harris said. “It made me feel like I had prepared well, because it was my first time presenting a proposal to the rest of the Board.”

With this decision, no additional days will be added onto the end of the school year. The school calendar was revised with students returning to school Jan. 3 after a two-week Christmas break. The second day will be made up by using hours already accrued.

“I’m very excited about Mr. Harris and his initiatives to extend our Thanksgiving Break to a weeklong,” says Dr. McComas. “I think it’s very needed for our staff and our students to be able to have some extra time with their families. It was exciting to see his work that went into getting the calendar ready and I think that people are going to enjoy a little bit of downtime.”
