The golf season has finally come to a close and both the boys and girls golf teams had very successful seasons this year. Both teams were able to have multiple top 5 finishes in tournaments, and the girls qualified for the All-State tournament.

The Boys team won their first tournament under head coach Brandon Franklin at Lafayette this year and had three second place finishes. The team shot their best overall score 292 at Kearney Hills golf links this year as well.

The program has come a long way since Franklin took over.

“The team has progressed nicely over the last couple years while competing in the most difficult region in the state,” he said. “We have continued to reach our goals by hard work and dedication from all of the players on the team.”

The team did fall short of qualifying for all state, missing the cut line by just 30 points. They also came up short of making it to the state tournament, coming in fourth place in the region tournament.

Having to compete in the toughest region in the state just made it too difficult for them to advance. Teams like the state champions Madison Central and state runners up LCA were in the region.

They still had Jacob Settles qualify individually for the state tournament with a score of 70 (-2) in the region, and went on to shoot +7 on the week and finish T-17. Settles also qualified individually for the All-State Tournament.

Franklin is very satisfied with this season. “I was pleased with our overall season results even though we came up short as a team to reach our goal of advancing past our Regional tournament,” he said. “We were competitive in nearly every tournament we played this year with multiple top 3 finishes as a team. We also had some great individual success with different members of the team securing Medalist honors at different tournaments throughout the year.”

Overall it was a pretty good year for the boys golf team and should have another great season next year.

The girls golf team had a very successful season qualifying for the all-state tournament and having some top five finishes. They had a second place finish at Grant County with a team score of 364, which helped them qualify for all state.

They also finished seventh in the region tournament, which is their best finish since coach Peter Wilkins took over.

“Our team has come a long way over the past three years,” Wilkins said. “Each year we have finished better than the previous year in our region.”

Just like the boys they had probably the toughest region in the state with all the Lexington schools and just like the boys, the state champions Madison Central.

They had a third place finish at their own tournament this year with Kamble Metz and Alexa Toler both shooting in the 80s. They had multiple girls break 90 this year including Sydney Wilkins at All State with a 83. They shot a team low the first day at all-state with a score of 357, which was their lowest score of the year.

Coach Wilkins was happy with his team’s overall performance. “This year was our best year that we have had in over six years,” he said.

Both teams may have not had the seasons they may have wanted but they both were very successful and impressive for the school.
