The Cards meet Madison Southern in the home opener tonight at 7:30.

The George Rogers Clark football team got off to a great start this year securing a blowout road win in week one over the Cooper Jaguars.

Last Friday the GRC football team traveled north to Cooper High School for their first game of the season. The 341 total offensive yards allowed GRC to put 28 points on the board.

Quarterback Tyleik Maxwell was 10-14 for 114 yards passing, and a touchdown. The ground game also provided a strong force with 227 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns. This was a Cooper team that had beaten the Cardinals the year before 30-3, and finished the year well above .500 with a 7-4 record.

The Cardinals couldn’t have asked for a better way to start the season.

Friday night lights will return to Cardinal Stadium for GRCs first home game of the season. This will be the first of a three-game home stretch.

They’ll look to carry the momentum this week as the Madison Southern Eagles will come to town.

The Eagles are coming off a 19-27 loss to Southwestern. Southwestern held Madison Southern to only 88 rushing yards last week, so if the Cardinal defense can contain the run game, they should be able to keep Eagles out of the redzone.

Southern’s defense gave up 210 yards on the ground, so if the Cardinals are able to stick to the ground game they should have no trouble putting points on the board and putting themselves in position to win.

A win Friday night will give the GRC program their best start in 11 years. It would be their first 2-0 start since 2011.

The Cards have a pretty favorable schedule this year with multiple opportunities to bring home a win.

Madison Central (Oct. 14) should be the toughest team on the schedule after the Indians defeated one of the best teams in the state in LCA last week.

GRC hasn’t had a great football team in a few years, so with such a dominating win last week the community is excited to see what this football team does, and there should be a great crowd tonight out to support the Cards.
