Bowling team sets high standards, continues to grow
GRC’s bowling team has exceeded their expectation of making it to state, and now are striving towards being state champions.
“We set a goal last year to make it to state this year, but last season, we actually met all of my goals for the team,” says coach Dodd Dixon. The team will be working on new goals to challenge them even more after surpassing last year’s goals.
Senior James Bowman has set some goals for himself and is excited for another exciting season. My personal goals this season are to first, grow the relationships with my teammates so we can perform our best and second, push myself to perform my best at every match.”
The bowling season will run until mid-February and students will be able to sign up until Nov. 1 if they want to be a part of the team.
GRC first introduced in the early 2000s, and since then, it has experienced growth each season. Coach Dixon expects there to be around 20 members.
“Our team has already grown this year more than last year,” says Bowman, “We have several returning members who started bowling the previous season, including myself, who had many flashes of great talent last year.”
Dixon wants to develop a functional Booster organization to give his team opportunities to travel out of state. “I think that important educational lessons are learned when you can travel to new places,” he said. “Also, it is fun.”
Last year the team was able to only have two practices each week, but Coach Dixon hopes to have more.
“It is not like baseball, basketball, or track where you just schedule practice,” Dixon explains. “We have to travel to practice, and then write a check after each practice.”
This is why fundraising through a Booster program will be key to even greater success.
Junior member Charley Wesley believes the team’s commitment and enthusiasm will help them go far. “I think that the people on this team are very dedicated,” Wesley said, “and we are all very excited to start the season.”
The Cardinals have set high expectations and are ready to tackle even more challenges this season.
