Lady Cards Soccer capitalizes on team chemistry

Number one in the District. Number one in the Region. Two state-ranked players. The GRC Lady Cards soccer team is a prime competitor for regions this year and they credit it to their team chemistry.

“I think this is the best a team has worked together since I’ve played for GRC,” said senior Carrie Stevens.

Coming off of a defeat last year in the Region Tournament to Bishop Brossart, the Cards are hungry for a better result this season.

“We’re more motivated this year, and we motivate each other more to work harder and play harder,” said sophomore Reese Patrick.

The Cards still have some more games to play, but so far they are showing their determination on the field with a record of 8-3-1.

GRC began the season finishing runner-up in the Fayette County Spectacular. “We beat some of the best Lexington teams like Dunbar and Douglass,” said Patrick.

The girls went on to take the top spot in the competitive Smoky Mountain Cup in Tennessee.

As postseason slowly gets closer, they have already shown themselves to be the team to beat in the 10th Region.

“Some of our key players are sophomores and freshmen, so other teams really underestimate us,” said junior Lily Franklin.

“We beat Bishop Brossart, and they’re one of the better teams in the region,” Franklin recalled. “They’ve beaten us two years in a row in region finals, so hopefully we will have the chance to redeem that loss this year.”

Last year GRC lost to Brossart 3-0 in the first round of the 10th Region tournament, so coming out on top during the regular season this year was an excellent confidence booster for the team.

The team still has some things to work on, though.

“We need to work on passing, communication, and trust,” Franklin said. “I hope we just keep getting better from here. We’ve proved ourselves so far, and I’m hoping we just keep proving ourselves to everyone.”

The girls are approaching a big weekend with Senior Night and a double header this Saturday (9/10).

“I expect us to continue improving,” Stevens said, “while getting a lot of wins along the way.”
