During the school day, while students are hard at work, the lunch crew is spending countless hours preparing food so that all students can have something to eat during lunch and breakfast. Their contribution to the school often goes unnoticed, but we could not go a day without them.
Cafeteria Manager Gina Walker, along with the rest of the lunch crew staff work tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure that every student can sit down at lunch and not have to worry if there will be food on the table.
If you think you have to wake up early, take a look at Walker and her team.
“I have to be at school around 5:10 to 5:30,” said Walker. “Me and around two other people start the day by filling up the merchandisers with drinks and filling up the chip carts.”
Walker isn’t the only person who has duties to fulfill in the mornings. There is a whole team doing their part to prepare for the day.
“I come in and get my production records ready for breakfast,” said cook Virginia Miller. “I make sure everything is getting prepared for breakfast and ready to go out on time.”
After breakfast is served, the work is not done. The crew gets started on preparing for second chance breakfast, and eventually lunch.
“At lunch time, I go out on the floor to help with everyone who needs it,” said Miller. “Then after, I come back and collect all the money from the cash register and do the tally for the day.”
Everyone in the cafeteria is working together to make all meals as smooth as possible for everyone.
“It’s a team effort, for all of us,” said cook Vicky Schoolmaster. “I mean we all move a lot, but we all help each other out and do almost everything.”
Every single person on the lunch crew is dedicated to helping the children of our school.
“Getting to know the students is my favorite part,” said Walker. “I get to see them outside of school and they remember me.”
Whether it be serving Tornados and cinnamon rolls in the morning, or asian chicken and chicken wings for lunch, you will almost never see a member of the lunch crew drop their smile. They are always trying to brighten the students’ days with high energy birthday celebrations and good vibes in the cafeteria.
“I love seeing the children during breakfast and lunch,” said Miller. “They truly make your day.”
