With the 40th District Tournament at a close, another regional tournament trip has been booked for the girls and boys alike. With the region right around the corner, there is no time to rest as both teams prepare for the road to Rupp.
GRC Hoops displayed nothing short of total domination as their two district victories consisted of a 91-33 victory over Paris, and a 74-43 win over district rival Montgomery County.
Coming off a strong 24-win season with just two losses, the girls do not look to slow down for regions. Tonight, they face Bishop Brossart at home for the first round of the 10th Region Tournament.
Despite the strength of Bishop Brossart, I’d say the Cards will find little trouble getting it done. With the game at home, and it being the first of the tournament, I’d look for them to come out hungry, and add another win to their undefeated regional record, as they currently sit 9-0 in region play on the year.
With Campbell County and Montgomery County battling it out in the first round on the other side of the bracket, I’d say that whoever wins that game will be who GRC will play in the championship game.
However, whoever it may be, I can confidently say that there will be little to fear as the girls have won their last 17, not having lost since January 8th! In those victories, they have won by an average margin of 34 points!
Additionally, WinCity also locked up a spot to compete in another regional tournament.
Though the district championship may not have ended how we had hoped, it may have ended up working out better for the Cardinals in the end.
Now, they will play Pendleton County in the first round, who has lost by double digits to Montgomery County, Bourbon County, and Nicholas County twice. All of those teamsGRC has beaten, despite the only region loss against Montgomery County this past week.
On top of that, GRC will get to play the winner of Mason County and Scott in the second round, which should not be all that of a difficult game either. All the while, Montgomery will face Bracken in the first round, which should result in a win for MoCo. But in the following round, the Indians will face the winner of Nicholas and Campbell County, likely Campbell.
With Campbell coming off of a regional championship two years ago, and currently sitting second in the region, I’d look for them to give Montgomery a game.
Just like the girls, the winner of that game is who I’d pick to punch their ticket to the regional championship on that side.
With the way it all worked out, WinCity has a far easier route to the championship.
Now, everyone is 0-0, it’s post-season time. This is our year to get back to our usual ways, and send off GRC Hoops and WinCity to Rupp in typical fashion.
