Archery is quickly becoming one of the most unique and competitive sports at George Rogers Clark High School, drawing students from all grade levels who are interested in precision, focus and discipline. Unlike traditional school sports, archery challenges athletes to rely on mental skill just as much as physical skill. As participation continues to grow, the GRC Archery team has gained attention for both its strong performances and dedication from its members.
Junior Jaime Bush, sophomores Jackson “JW” Sosby, and Abigail Berry have emerged as key contributors to the GRC archery team, each bringing focus and steady performance to the lineup.
“Going into the competitions I don’t really think much, I don’t have to get locked in or anything like that,” said Sosby. “I do it for fun because I’m good at it.”
To some competitors, archery is a fun,stress-free sport, but it often turns into something more. Archery helps students build friendships and strengthen bonds within teams.
“When I started archery, I wanted to build connections and friendships,” said Bush. “I never really feel stress while doing it, not even during competitions. When I’m out there it just feels like me and the target.”
The welcoming atmosphere created through these connections has helped make archery a sport that is open and accessible to all students.
“If you want something that is easy and fun to do you should join the team,” said Berry.
The positive environment surrounding the program has carried over into competition. The Archery team has placed well in recent events. The team has recently put on a good performance in regions and qualified in state in 3D and aiming to qualify for Bullseye.
“Archery is something that anybody can do, just pick up a bow, aim and good times will come,” said Bush.
