When thinking about GRC athletics, the first things that come to mind are basketball, soccer, baseball, etc. While the light shined on these sports is deserved, one sport in particular can sometimes be put on the back burner and may not get the credit it is worthy of. The Wrestling team puts in timeless hours to show out for the Cards.
Freshman wrestler, Danica Patrick, gave some insight on why people should give wrestling a watch.
“People should watch wrestling because it is very hands-on,” said Patrick. “Lots of times the sport is overlooked because of the long days at competitions and oftentimes our peers believe it’s boring.”
While wrestling tends to find itself in the shadows, lots of spotlight has been drawn to Midway commit and senior, Brock Heidle. After coming up short last year, Heidle and company have high hopes for his last season as a Cardinal.
“This season, I am looking for a state championship,” Heidle stated. “At minimum, a state placement before graduation.”
As the team has hopes for gold, they want to encourage others to get on the mat themselves.
“In seventh grade, the coaches came to our school and introduced the sport to us,” Patrick stated. “From that moment on I fell in love with the sport and the hard work that comes with it.”
While some were drawn to the attraction of the sport from a middle school meeting, others have personal ties that drive them to be the best competitors they can.
“From a young age, I saw my dad training towards the end of his career,” said Heidle. “Seeing my dad in the sport, along with my friends who also competed, helped me find a love for the sport.”
