Cardinals Drop Rivalry Game to Montgomery County
- Following a dominant victory over Dunbar last week, 17-0, GRC took the field in Mt. Sterling looking to win a third consecutive game, and a second consecutive over bitter rivals Montgomery County.
In what was expected to be a competitive and heated game, the Cardinals took the field with confidence and momentum.
However, a touchdown by the Indians halfway through the first quarter handed Montgomery County their first lead.
The Cards wasted no time in striking right back, as Nitavius Thomas punched it in for a touchdown, and a 7-7 tie.
The Montgomery County offense took over from there on, scoring on four occasions in the second quarter. The Cardinal offense struggled to score, and the defense found difficulty in stopping the Indian rushing attack. Montgomery County held a 35-7 lead at halftime.
The second half showed signs of improvement, and determination.
The defense didn’t give up, and allowed only 16 points in the second half. However, the Montgomery County offense seemed a formidable foe.
As for the offense in the second half, Nitavius Thomas built upon a great start to the season, scoring a second rushing touchdown of the game, that put the Cards down 41-14.
GRC would go on to lose the game, 51-21. Dr. Oliver Lucas drops his first game coaching against Montgomery County, but will look to turn his team around next week as the Cardinals host the Grant County Braves. GRC will look to move back to a winning record next week, as they fall to 2-2 on the season.
