As time goes on and technology advances, new types of artificial intelligence have been created. Some students use ChatGPT for the greater good, while others take advantage of it.
Addison: Helpful
ChatGPT, while it can be very harmful to our modern-day society, is also an incredible resource for students. For some students, an 8-hour school day is incredibly strenuous socially, but especially academically. As the school day goes on students can grow increasingly more tired, with information after information being piled on top of them. This leads to these students finding it incredibly difficult to stay alert and able to learn. By the time they’ve come home from a long day of school, they have forgotten everything they’ve learned. This is where ChatGPT comes to the rescue. If you ask ChatGPT any question, it gives you a long, in-depth explanation giving you the opportunity to learn how to do the equation, or re-teaching the information that had gotten lost throughout the day. If used the right way, ChatGPT is an incredible assistance to students who struggle with learning during school hours.
Raegan: Harmful
ChatGPT is what people who are too lazy to actually do their work use. Most of the time students are smart enough to do their work by themselves, but they just choose to not put in any actual effort. They stick to mindlessly copying down whatever AI tells them and become reliant on using AI to do their work instead of doing it by themselves. In the long run, students that use ChatGPT to copy answers only end up not knowing any information on their own. What happens when they have a test or pop quiz? They won’t be able to recall information and have a high possibility of bombing the test. Plus, teachers can tell if students suddenly have a super high vocabulary compared to their normal word choice. It can be extremely obvious that a student uses ChatGPT to cheat when they all of a sudden have college level writing skills instead of their past style of writing.
