There are two types of people in this world: Scary Halloween and silly Halloween people. Many younger kids in recent years have taken Halloween as a time to dress up as their favorite characters such as Bluey and Barbie. However, some older kids choose a different path gravitating towards haunted houses and scary movie marathons. Multimedia Staff Carter and Vivi Anne have given their opinion on this divisive topic.
Carter: Scary Halloween
Just imagine, you are walking through a haunted house, waiting for a zombie to pop out, but all that comes is a cartoon ghost saying, “Boo!” Halloween isn’t for cute cartoon characters that kids will laugh at. It is meant to scare people and that is what they expect. Halloween started over 2,000 years ago as a festival for the dead and the living worlds coming together for one night. All ghosts came out to haunt and scare people. It started as a fear-driven holiday and it should stay that way. There is a reason that haunted houses, scare mazes, and horror movies are very popular during this time of the year. Personally, I want to be scared during Halloween, and that definitely won’t happen if Casper the Ghost pops out at me. Halloween should be scary, not silly.
Vivi Anne: Silly Halloween
We all know and love the magical experience that is trick-or-treating as a child. Dressing up as Disney characters, watching fun Halloween movies, and looking at festive decorations is what the holiday is truly about. Halloween is meant to be a kid-friendly holiday, not one that leaves children feeling terrified and scarred from seeing frightening costumes and setups. Everyone knows that classic Halloween movies like “Halloweentown” and “Hocus Pocus” are better than horror ones like “It” and “Halloween”. When I was a kid, my favorite parts of Halloween were planning my costumes and watching the same movies each year. Let’s keep the scary stuff to a minimum and make this fun-filled holiday one that every age can enjoy.
