The Cincinnati Reds haven’t been very relevant since they won the World Series 35 years ago in 1990. Being a Reds fan those 35 years has to have been tough, but this year’s Reds team looks to change that. With a Mets loss, the Reds have clinched the final wild card spot in the playoffs and look to make a deep run.
The last time the Reds made the playoffs wasn’t too long ago. It was only five years ago, but they ended up getting swept by the Braves. Since 1990, the Reds have only been to the playoffs five times and each time they have lost their first series. The Reds have only known losing for the last three decades.
Being a Reds fan over the years has been brutal. They have always been known to choke at the end of the season and the postseason. With no playoff series wins in that long, fans had no hope. However, many fans are feeling an odd sense of optimism going into the playoffs.
This year, it was looking as if we were going to see the same old Reds again until September came around. The Reds got hot, and when I say hot, I mean hot. They went 14-11 this month and won all the games that mattered. They now play the Dodgers in the National League Wild Card series looking to win their first in 35 years.
The Dodgers are pretty much the MLB equivalent to the Avengers. They have superstars at every position and are World Series favorites. They have Shohei Ohtani, who is considered the best player in the league. Some even say he will be the best to ever play by the time he retires. Nobody in their right mind is giving the Reds a chance to even compete in this series.
However, the Reds have some star players of their own. The Reds are led by superstar shortstop Elly De La Cruz. He is a flashy playmaker who balls out every game. He is known around the country for his on-field accessories, also known as “drip”. They also have a star pitcher in Hunter Greene. The flamethrowing righty regularly throws 100 mph and has a wicked arsenal of pitches. These two will look to lead the Reds on their way to make history and beat the Dodgers.
Even though many don’t believe the Reds can win, Reds manager Terry Francona says, “You can’t kill the Reds.”
