Homecoming isn’t just about the big dance Saturday night, it’s also about the school spirit that leads up to it. The school spirit dress-up days, the parade and Powderpuff games, community and school pep rallies, and the big game Friday night get students, staff, and the community excited.
The spirit week dress-up days were PJ Day on Monday, Disney Day on Tuesday, Country vs Country Club on Wednesday, Decades Day on Thursday, and Color Wars (between the grade levels) on Friday. Pep Club did submissions for homecoming spirit week days during a club day meeting and then they took the suggestions before the administration and got them approved.
GRC is not only getting students excited for homecoming, but the community as well with the homecoming parade.
“Thursday, floats will start lining up for the parade on Depot Street at 4:30pm, go down Main Street, and stop right across from Smoking Howards; that’s where each group will stop and be announced,” said Administrative Secretary Christi Jones.
The fun doesn’t stop after the parade as the celebration and food moves to Cardinal Stadium, or the arena if it rains. There will be a BBQ food truck and a treats and drinks food truck.
“Thursday night we are having a community pep rally,” Pep Club Co-Sponsor Laura Sands said. “That will be where we have our Powderpuff games, the band will perform, then a pep rally to get everyone excited about being here Friday night.”
Speaking of the Powderpuff games, these are a great way to get involved as our female students get their shot at throwing some touchdown passes of their own.
“Powderpuff for students is gonna be Thursday night; semi-final games will be played at 7:30-ish pm, depending on how long the parade takes,” said Mrs. Sands. “Those will be played simultaneously. The championship game will be played at about 8:15-8:30pm. The winner of the championship game will play the staff Friday morning during the school pep rally.”
The school pep rally will have lots of fun things including the fight for the spirit stick.
“We are gonna do some Minute to Win It games, fall sport recognitions, some club recognitions, introduce the homecoming court, introduce the football team, and we are gonna have some class competitions for the spirit stick,” said Mrs. Sands.
Between the parade rolling through downtown showing off all the different clubs and groups, the pep rally pumping everyone up with food and Powderpuff, the spirit days bringing everyone together, and the big game against West Jessamine, these are all the perfect chances to come together as a school and even a community.
