The Governor’s School for the Arts and the Governor’s Scholars program are very well known among community members all across the state.
For each program, the goal is to develop and further the education of what these students are passionate about and to help them succeed in a collegiate world and in their future careers.
Having six students accepted to GSP and five students accepted to GSA this year, it’s safe to say that GRC is full of exceptional and hard-working students.
Throughout their times in their programs, they will grow and experience things you cannot come across anywhere else.
The students going to GSP this year are Heidi Castle, Mallory Ellis, Isabelle Herringshaw, Karlee Gray, Steven Yang, and Ella Howton.
The students going to GSA this year are Wyatt Jackson, Carter Johnston, Hannah Lam, Lauren McCraith, and Madalyn Palmer.
“I had wanted to apply to GSP since my freshman year because I wanted a unique summer experience that would prepare me for college,” says Mallory Ellis. “So, I worked hard to build up my resume and ACT to heighten my chances of being accepted.”
GSP students will go to one of three colleges for five weeks, and GSA participants will go for three weeks.
One of the greatest benefits of these programs is that it brings kids together from all over Kentucky who are reaching toward similar goals and share similar mindsets.
This is a great way to make friends and form new connections. Many students are also excited about being put into a whole new environment with a whole new community to be a part of.
“My dad and my sister’s experiences were so amazing and shaped their lives as they went into college,” says Isabelle Herringshaw. “They met amazing people and learned so much while still having an enjoyable summer.”
There are so many things to be excited about when going to one of these unique programs, and many students cannot wait to step into a new setting like this.
“The things I am definitely looking forward to the most are learning areas in visual art at a more advanced level than I have ever been able to ever before,” says Maddy Palmer, “and a semi-college-like life for three weeks away from home creating nothing but art and learning all I can.”
