Year after year there is a small, passionate group of GRC students chosen to take on the role of leading the student section.
Their main job is energizing the students at sports events. They lead cheers during games, plan themes for the section, and create a positive environment. Their energy helps fuel the team and connects the student body even more.
When you are one of the few student section leaders, you realize that it is a position that not a lot of people can experience.
“Being a leader was a unique experience that gave me something to be involved in and plan for,” Leader Anna Barnes said. “Getting to go be with my friends everyday cheering for all of our teams was definitely the best part.”
Leader Chason Clark added, “Being a leader is fun, for me it was hard to alternate between watching the games and also focusing on the section. But in general I loved it and would 100% do it again.”
The section leaders will most likely have one of the best seats in the house for all of the games. That is just one of the upsides of being a leader.
“I got to be in the front row supporting my school and all of their games,” Leader Ben Cantrell said. “It helps that we have a lot of great sports teams, so it’s more fun to watch.”
One of the staples of a student section leader would obviously be the chants. That is the best way to get the crowd involved in the game to make a great atmosphere. Ben said, “It was cool leading the chants and seeing everyone follow my lead. The chants have been around for a long time so it was just easy to pick those up and use ones that everyone already knows.”
Some people don’t notice the work that happens behind the scenes of all of the games. There is so much more that goes into just cheering during the games.
“Behind the scenes running instagram and making the graphics was a lot of work but very rewarding when people use you as a resource for information,” Anna said.
There are many different traits that benefit someone in a section leader position. The leaders give advice to the future Get Rowdy leaders.
“To be a Rowdy Crew leader you obviously have to have leadership,” says Ben. “You need to be passionate and need to care about GRC sports.”
Leader Camahni John added, “You have to be brave and outgoing because you need to be ready to step out of your comfort zone at any time.”
Adds leader Cady Johnson: “You need to be someone that people can respect, someone that is super outgoing, and a person who isn’t scared to participate in anything.”
After another successful year with the student section, it sadly has to come to an end.
At the end of every school year the previous student section leaders choose another group of students to do it the following year.
The Get Rowdy Crew members for next year are Grayce Compton, Ryland Dixon, Wade Johnson, Camden Raney, and Campbell Sutherland.
