With a passion to make an impact at GRC, two high school students are ready to step up as drum majors and create a legacy of their own.
The drum majors for next year are Caitlynn McDuffard and Abbey Sparks; their dedication and commitment will enhance strong leadership within the band.
Their role will be essential in helping the band succeed while creating memorable experiences for everyone involved.
Being a drum major requires a sense of devotion and leadership to guide the band and bring out the best in every performance.
“I’ve always had a passion for band, but specifically for the role of drum major,” Caitlynn says. “I wanted to be the person who helped lead the band to excellence and influence others to be the best version of themselves.”
Having the opportunity to become a drum major is a significant step into a student’s band journey, as it not only allows for personal growth but also provides a chance to influence other band members.
“I wanted to take on this position to help create a positive, welcoming community within the band,” Abbey says. “I’ve always looked up to my past drum majors, and I hope to grow into the best version of myself through this leadership opportunity.”
It is important to not be afraid to be yourself, while remembering to spread kindness to those around you.
“I hope that I inspire the members of the GRC Band to remember to always be kind, and to be their authentic self,” Caitlynn says. “You don’t need to change who you are to fit in.”
By uplifting others, it will create a positive environment where everyone feels valued and heard, allowing for strong bonds and lasting memories for everyone involved.
“I hope to be remembered as someone who was approachable, kind, and always there for others—a true friend to everyone in the band,” Abbey says.
Drum majors can be encouraging and uplifting to members in the band, driving them to excellence and helping them achieve their personal goals for years ahead.
“Many of my friends have been GRC drum majors and spoke highly of the experience,” Abbey says. “Ever since my first year in band, I’ve been inspired by the leadership and spirit of our drum majors, and it made me want to follow in their footsteps.”
“The past drum majors of the GRC Band were what inspired me the most,” Caitlynn says. “They were always kind to others, and always did what was right. They served as excellent role models, and I hope to be as amazing as they were.”
With Caitlynn’s and Abbey’s passion and determination to succeed, they will create their own legacy as the 2026 drum majors.
