If you were to go to a coffee shop in the summer, they’d likely be advertising their new refreshing iced drink. However, if you were to go to the same coffee shop in the winter they’d be pushing their new cozy hot drink.
But which is better year-round? Multimedia Staff Audrey Kohler and Heiraelle Osborne are here to put this debate to rest.
Cold drinks all the way
I absolutely hate it when I get a hot chocolate or coffee and it burns my tongue every time I try to take a sip from it. It makes the entire experience unpleasant. I can’t taste the drink because my tongue is too numb from being burned. I don’t want a drink that’s going to burn my tongue off.
Cold drinks are so much better. I can taste them, they are refreshing, and they don’t make me feel like I’m in a sauna. Hot drinks have very little options too. With cold drinks, I can pick from so many different kinds and flavors.
With hot drinks, you are limited to cider, coffee, and hot chocolate. Even in the winter, cold drinks are better. It’s not like my ice will melt. Don’t even get me started on hot chocolate. The thought of warm milk is disgusting. I’m surprised people don’t get sick from it.
Some things just aren’t meant to be warmed up. The only time I will consider drinking a hot drink is when my voice is next to gone, doesn’t mean I enjoy it, though. And I’m not even sure it helps because it probably burns my esophagus more than it heals it. It’s not helping if it only burns my throat.
You’re telling me you could eat a hot meal and drink a hot beverage with it? You are putting yourself through so much unnecessary discomfort. Cold drinks will forever be my choice. Enjoy your cup of lava.
Hot drinks are superior
Hot drinks are obviously the superior choice any time of year. Who would want their drinks watered down with freezing cold ice cubes? You’re missing out on half the drink! If you think the ice is worth it because you like to chew it, I hope you know how bad that is for your teeth.
Even after you’re done running up your dentist bills, the ice is still awful because it numbs your mouth. There is nothing more embarrassing than not being able to feel your lips enough to form coherent sentences. Hot drinks can help soothe a sore throat, relax you to sleep, and warm your hands in the wintertime.
Additionally, at drive-thru coffee shops, cold coffee is served in single-use plastic cups with a plastic straw. This is so much worse for the environment than the strawless paper cups that hot coffees are served in. Hot drinks are more versatile from season to season, especially for me since I’m always cold.
When drinks are served with ice, condensation forms on the cup which can lead to ugly ring shapes on wooden surfaces which are practically impossible to remove. A warm drink in summer feels like the sun gently hitting your face on a nice day, but I can’t even touch a cold drink in the winter without feeling like my fingers are going to fall off.
Why would you pay to be cold, fighting condensation, and for less liquid? You can take me a HOT TO GO drink.
