Every child is a puzzle waiting to be solved, each with their own unique challenges.
Teachers who work with exceptional students find their days enriched with unexpected joys and meaningful experiences, making each moment extremely rewarding.
One of the exceptional teachers, Lauren Downs, was inspired to work with these students because she believed that every child deserves to reach their full potential, regardless of the challenges they may face.
“Every child deserves a voice and someone to advocate for them, especially when they cannot do it themselves,” Downs says. “Helping my students express themselves, achieve their full potential, and feel valued drives my passion for teaching every day.”
Instructional Assistant Taylor Lewis has always enjoyed working with exceptional children. She started with peer tutoring at GRC, her senior year of high school and fell in love with working and engaging with the students.
“My favorite part about this job is working so closely with each student and helping them prepare for their future after they leave high school,” Lewis says.
Teachers who work with exceptional students have an incredibly rewarding and fulfilling job. Witnessing their students daily growth and achievements makes every step forward a significant milestone in their student’s journey.
“Every day, I see them make progress, whether it’s mastering a new skill or gaining more confidence,” says Downs. “What’s especially fulfilling is forming a unique relationship with each student, understanding their strengths, challenges, and how they learn best. Being part of their journey and celebrating their individual victories is what makes my heart so full,” said Downs.
Even though some days will be more challenging than others, the students make it worth it with their kind and loving hearts.“The love our students have for us is so rewarding and knowing we are a safe place for them on their hardest days is the best feeling,” Lewis says.
For teachers of exceptional students, there is never a typical day in the classroom. Every day brings new challenges and opportunities, shaped by the needs of the students.
“Each student comes with their own set of obstacles and we have to learn how to navigate each student individually,” says Lewis.
Teachers are constantly adapting their lessons to ensure that each student feels engaged and supported. “Throughout the day, we teach the same content as general education students, but it is adapted and differentiated to meet individual learning needs,” Downs says. “Instruction includes hands-on activities, sensory breaks, and life skills practice, fostering both academic and functional growth in a supportive and flexible environment.”
It is important to remember that every student has their own journey and unique timeframe for learning, so being patient and supportive helps them achieve their goals.
“The work can be challenging at times, but the relationships you build and the impact you make in your students’ lives will be incredibly rewarding,” says Downs. “Don’t let anyone else stand between you and the love you can share. Stay flexible, be persistent, and never underestimate the difference you can make.”
The support and care from teachers of exceptional students helps piece together the puzzles, guiding students to reach their full potential.
