It’s that time of year again, my favorite time of the year: Basketball season!
Basketball is a fan favorite here at GRC and in our community. We have outstanding teams this year and they have all the tools they need to achieve greatness, except for one thing. School spirit and student involvement.
GRC is an incredible school with great academics, astonishing sports teams, and an amazing staff and faculty, but there is one thing holding GRC back from reaching its full potential — school spirit. For the past couple of years, GRC has been sorely lacking in school spirit.
In previous years, pep rallies have been dead with hardly anyone participating- the student section has had little to no students attending and the overall feeling of the school has been down and depressing. As a student body we must do better. We must make an effort to be more involved in our school and community.
We need to work harder to make the incoming classes excited for highs chool, games, dances and other activities. School spirit has been down for too long. It is time for it to make a comeback, and pep rallies so far this year show promise.
It is so easy for everyone to try to place the blame of lack of school spirit on each other, but we are all one united school and community, so instead of placing blame we need to find a solution.
We had a pep rally earlier this year and it was very different from any other pep rally we have had. It was fun and energetic. People were getting involved and participating. It was refreshing to see this new wave of spirit rush over GRC for the first time in a very long time.
However the football games didn’t receive the same love and excitement that the pep rally did. The student section was lacking students, and the students who did show up left at half time.
Hopefully we can learn from the football season and do better for basketball season.
With a new school year, new section leaders, and new ideas, school spirit looks like it might start to make its way into GRC, but as a school we need to welcome it with open arms.
A crucial part of student involvement is the Get Rowdy Crew. There are five leaders this year — Anna Barnes, Ben Cantrell, Chason Clark, Camanhni John, and Cady Johnson.
The Get Rowdy Crew is a student-led group not officially affiliated with the school but devoted to increasing school spirit.
“In the past we have had nobody show up to games and if they do show up they don’t cheer, and hardly anyone wants to participate in any activities or events,” John said.
Barnes added, “School spirit brings everybody together and makes us all grow closer and boost morale so as a school and student body we need to increase the school spirit at GRC.”
The Get Rowdy Crew members are aware of the lack of spirit and have come up with a plan to try and fix it.
“We want to create fun and interactive themes that people want to do,” said Johnson. “We need to post polls and get people to vote so that they can have a say in what are doing.”
Clark agreed, adding, “Yeah, just do fun things that students can participate in more often. We also need to get other students to convince their friends to go.”
Cantrell bounces off of that and says, “The Get Rowdy Crew is completely dependent on student involvement and participation.”
The Get Rowdy Crew gives us ideas, events, and opportunities to show school spirit, but as a student body we also have to do our part and start attending and bringing the energy to games and pep rallies.
Stop leaving the games at half time, start cheering, show your support, and Let’s Get Rowdy!
