Superstitions are a big part of a sports game for some players.
Many GRC athletes have fun and unique pre-game rituals that help them lock in for their game or match.
I asked some fall sports athletes about their pre-game customs.
Max Moore, Golf
Before every tournament round starts, I always put a black line in the same spot on all three balls in the sleeve that the coach gives me. Before every shot, I take two practice swings, get behind the ball, and subconsciously pull my right sleeve up and the back of my hat down.
Camdyn Harrison, Soccer
I try to play like it’s my last game because anything can happen and I say a small prayer before we play.
Anna Cooper, Volleyball
Before a game I pray, put my headphones on and listen to music. Ava Mardis usually braids my hair then I put it in a bun or a slick back with a braid or ponytail.
Cole Rose, Football
I wear the same undershirt and socks every game. Freshman year I had a good game wearing them and I’ve worn them for good luck ever since.
Raegan McCormick, Soccer
I always have to wear my hair in the same hairstyle, two Dutch braids into a ponytail, every game I wear ankle socks under my soccer socks.
Allison Asherwood, Cross Country
I make sure I have eaten my Peanut Butter cup yogurt. I make sure to stretch properly, say a prayer, and ask God to give me strength, keep me safe, and help me do my best.
Josie Belcher, Golf
I’ve had the same pre-tournament rituals for a few years. I like to stick to the same warmup for each tournament, starting with my driver and working my way down to my pitching wedge.
