You get home after a long day at school, fix your favorite snack, and sit down to binge one of your favorite movies.
You can’t find your favorite movie on your watched list, so you decide to look it up. Much to your disappointment, your favorite movie is gone. Netflix removed it from their catalog.
We all have a favorite show or movie that has fallen victim to the “leaving soon” category on Netflix. Whether this is because of an expired license agreement or not enough people watching it, it’s sad to see them go.
It can be quite difficult to find films and/or series on DVDs for a reasonable price. It also gets frustrating trying to find a streaming service that provides them, and then paying for that service as well.
One of these fan-favorite shows was The Office. It got the boot from Netflix in January of 2021. Set in a paper-company in Scranton, PA, the show was full of jokes and light-hearted fun. Whenever I wanted a laugh, all I had to do was turn on The Office, and I always got what I was looking for. With an 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 4.8 stars on IMDb, the mockumentary-style sitcom quickly made its way into the hearts of fans.
Doctor Who is another television series that Netflix ripped away from our screens. With a whopping 90% Rotten Tomatoes rating, there is no reason for it not to be available on Netflix. The British Sci-Fi first aired in 1963, gaining more and more fans throughout the years. It makes sense to keep it on Netflix’s catalog.
One movie that Netflix unfortunately cut from the streaming service was The Breakfast Club. The movie was removed in October, so this wound hasn’t healed completely, and it probably never will. The iconic comedy/drama film was released in 1985, and has since then received an 89% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.8 star review on IMDb.I found this movie easily relatable, and the diversity between characters was impressive. I think this movie has a great lesson as well. It was sad to watch this movie go.
The hit television show Friends was a devastating loss as well. This American Sitcom was full of light-hearted fun and took viewers on a relatable, emotional journey. With an 8.9 on IMDb and a rating of 78% on Rotten Tomatoes, this removal caused quite a bit of backlash. So much so, Netflix delayed the removal and allowed viewers to watch it for one more year before removing it in January of 2020. Much like The Office, Friends was great at delivering laugh-worthy content. I thoroughly enjoyed being able to watch it so easily. But I guess I’ll dust off my mom’s old DVDs.
I know Netflix does their best to provide quality content for us to stream at home, and sometimes that requires freeing up space. That doesn’t mean we don’t miss these classic movies and TV shows. Until they are added back to Netflix, my tears will be the ones doing the streaming.
