With the holiday season coming up, teachers have been dancing what feels like a Cell Block Tango to make things a little less hectic.
This includes revealing some exciting news about what is in store. In the arts department, the reveal of this year’s school musical has been long awaited and anticipated and the wait is finally over! The 2024-25 GRC musical is Chicago (Teen Edition).
Drama teacher John Lawwill and music teacher Kristofer Olson chose to reveal the musical in early October. The wait has created a lot of buzz from all students, regardless of their involvement with the musical.
“One of the songs blew up on TikTok (They Both Reached for the Gun) and I have been obsessed ever since,” said Junior DaZyre Hooten. “I cannot wait to see it.”
Aside from general excitement, people are already preparing for the auditions, which will be held on November 18th and 19th.
“Whenever we have a big audition coming up, it is important to pick a song for the character that you want,” said sophomore Raegan McCormick. “I think this year will be a really fun show and I can’t wait to audition.”
Choosing a musical takes very careful consideration. An important part of this is building on the talent that you have and striving to create a better show every year.
“Chicago fits the tone that we are going for this year,” said Olson. “Two years ago we did Bright Star, which was a drama; last year we did Anything Goes, which was a comedy. So this year, we are trying to bridge that gap between the two and we thought that Chicago would be a perfect fit.”
The theater department is wanting to blow others’ expectations out of the water. They are looking to have people say, “That was great!” and not just, “That was great for a high school.”
They hope to see everyone at auditions. If being on stage isn’t your thing, then come support all of the actors when the show opens in April.
“It is a sophisticated show that has many different styles and skills that we haven’t done before,” said Olson. “I believe that we have the skill and talent to make this the best production that we have ever put on.”
