Hocus Pocus is a win
If you’re looking for a light-hearted Halloween movie with evil witchy sisters, the 1993 classic Hocus Pocus provides a perfect fall feeling with its unique blend of humor, heart, and just the right amount of spookiness.
This movie has a nostalgic charm to it that appeals to all ages. The movie has loads of witty humor which makes it suitable for the entire family!
Compared to the other darker Halloween movies, Hocus Pocus is a movie that doesn’t leave you fearful of the antagonist. How can you be scared of witches that ride vacuum cleaners instead of brooms and sing songs?
By the end of the movie you are almost rooting for the Sanderson Sisters because they are not meant to be perceived as super evil characters.
The plot of this Halloween classic causes debate among those who watch it. Some say that the plot is predictable and boring, while I believe that the plot perfectly matches the tone of the film. The movie is intended to be a fun experience and not a suspenseful horror that leaves you on the edge of your seat.
The storyline provides just enough conflict to keep you interested and backs it up with comedic moments to make the film as a whole more enjoyable.
So if you haven’t seen this incredible classic halloween movie, grab a blanket and a bucket of popcorn and dive into this amazing movie.
But if you decide not to, that’s alright because after all, “It’s all just a bunch of hocus pocus!”
Hocus Pocus is a fail
When I turn on a Halloween movie, I want to get either a really good laugh, or a really good scare. I want to rant about it to my friends and family about how good it is. Hocus Pocus is not a rant-worthy Halloween film.
It seems as though the directors couldn’t make up their mind on the movie’s genre. They wanted it to be spooky, but it’s not scary enough. It lacks humor, so it’s not a comedy. There aren’t enough songs to be classified as a musical. They can’t make up their mind.
I’m all for Halloween movies that aren’t excessively gorey, but there are other ways to be spooky. Hocus Pocus is about as scary as a teddy bear. Even if it was directed toward kids, I don’t think they successfully spooked them either.
If Hocus Pocus was supposed to be funny, they didn’t achieve that goal, either. The jokes are poorly delivered. If they even get delivered, that is.
The funniest part was the cover of I Put a Spell on You, simply because it wasn’t good. I love Bette Midler as much as the next person, but that was an injustice to her.
I also don’t understand why the director’s felt they needed a musical number if they weren’t going to keep it consistent.
Hocus Pocus may have been good for its time, but it doesn’t deserve its spot in IMDb’s #1 Halloween film.
