Here at George Rogers Clark, students are required to obtain a parking pass to park in the student parking lot.
We are given assigned spots in which we have to park every day. These parking passes will run you $10 to purchase.
In the past, students with a 4.0 GPA got these parking passes completely free of charge, but this year, that is not the case.
Every student has to pay for a parking pass, despite some having perfect grade point averages.
GRC likes to incentivize students who have good grades and show effort in school, so why not make free parking passes for a 4.0 GPA part of those incentives?
Free parking passes once were an amazing incentive and a great reward but now high-achieving students must pay for a pass.
The incentive of a free parking pass would be great motivation to strive for a 4.0.
The parking passes are a small piece of paper that says which spot you park in. It’s not like they are expensive to make.
Many students at GRC have worked extremely hard to keep up with strong academics all four years of high school.
Those with a 4.0 were expecting once again to receive a parking pass free of charge, only to be shocked when we were told to fork up
$10 for something that once was free.
Some students fail to park in their spots anyway, causing a chain reaction of cars in the wrong spots, so already the parking pass system has its flaws.
Ten dollars might not seem like much, but to high school students, it can be.
That’s a meal from Cook Out, two drinks from Starbucks, or at least a few gallons of gas.
If students are working hard every day, maintaining a high GPA, and showing strong effort, why can’t we cut them a break and give them free parking passes anyway, just like in previous years?
GRC surely wants all of its students to be high achievers. With that truth in mind, it makes sense that parking passes should be free to 4.0 students.
