Former editor designs graphics for new stadium

Nick Hounshell became known around the school and community last year for the sports graphics he created. The former Smoke Signals editor-in-chief has used his talent to leave an indelible mark on Cardinal Stadium. Nick has created four large format graphics that will adorn the outside walls of the stadium.

“When I first learned that the school wanted me to design the graphics, I was super excited,” said Nick, now a sports administration major at the University of Louisville. “It’s my first ‘real’ graphic design job, which is awesome to me because I get to do what I love to do. Because of that, I couldn’t wait to get started on the project, and I got straight to work.”

His journalism teacher at GRC, Mrs. Crosby, said she isn’t surprised Nick was given this opportunity. “Nick has gifts that can’t be taught,” she said. “As his teacher all through high school, it was a true honor for me to watch him take the initiative and grow into one of the most talented graphic designers I know.”

The graphics represent all GRC groups and sports teams that will compete on the field — football, girls’ and boy’s soccer, track and marching band. They will be installed on the wall above the main stadium entrance, standing as Nick’s design legacy at GRC.

“I think it’s really awesome,” Nick says. “The stadium is a huge deal to our county and was one of the main focuses of my journalism career, and being able to contribute to that final product is very honoring.”
